Dresden (dpa / sn) – According to the first interim results, the CDU candidates are usually ahead in the district elections in Saxony. In the districts of North Saxony and Leipziger Land, the election could be decided this evening. Around 8:15 p.m., with 64.6 percent of the votes, there was an absolute majority for the incumbent Kai Emanuel in northern Saxony, as the State Statistical Office announced on its website. Although Emanuel is not a party himself, he was nominated by the CDU. He has so far left the candidate of the far-right Freie Sachsen, Uta Hesse, far behind.

In the Leipzig district, incumbent Henry Graichen (CDU) can also count on an absolute majority. He was around 8:30 p.m. with 69.5 percent of the votes. The CDU in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district could also achieve an absolute majority. Christian Democrat Michael Geisler initially had 54.6 percent of the votes.

Only in the district of Mittelsachsen could the CDU candidate miss first place. There, the mayor of Augustusburg, Dirk Neubauer (non-party), was initially in front. With 39.5 percent of the votes, according to the interim result, it did not look like an absolute majority at first.

If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes in a district, a new election is held in three weeks. Then whoever gets the most votes wins.
