Wittichenau (dpa / sn) – In the area of ????the Catholic Sorbs, four wayside crosses were damaged in the community of Wittichenau (Bautzen district). In a statement on Thursday, Ordinariatsrat Daniel Frank from the Catholic Office in Saxony spoke of an attack on the Christian faith. “This is clearly not just damage to property or theft.”

According to Frank, two metal crosses disappeared last Saturday night, they were cut off with tools or broken out of the granite base. The small plate with the Latin word Credo for “I believe” is missing from another one. The fourth wooden cross with the body of Christ was unscrewed and placed upside down on the base. Due to the spatial and temporal proximity of the destruction, Frank assumes a concerted action.

“Our Christian confession is being trampled on,” said Frank, who now wants to contact the Interior Ministry. The Christian churches must be given the same social vigilance as other religious communities “if an attack occurs there”. In Sorbian Lusatia there have been cross-desecrations for years, which hurt the feelings of believers. The almost thousand crosses and other religious symbols on roads, in villages or on the edges of fields are mostly privately owned and cared for by families.
