Chemnitz (dpa/sn) – The flood protection dike in Chemnitz is safe again. After a construction period of around a year, damage had been repaired, the stability of the dyke restored and the cycle path released for permanent use again, the Saxony State Dam Administration announced on Wednesday in Pirna. The old dike was soaked by the flood of 2013, which is why it could no longer be assessed as stable. The costs for the construction measures totaled around 1.3 million euros and were financed with funds from the Free State.
Around 600 meters of the dike were rebuilt between Bornaer Straße and Autobahn 4 in Chemnitz-Borna. The old dike built between 1933 and 1935 was initially dismantled in individual sections of 100 meters. So-called sheet piles were then laid to seal the inside and the dyke was rebuilt. A memorial stone commemorating the original building will also be put up again after completion.
