Dresden (dpa / sn) – According to the recommendation of experts, teachers in Saxony should also be able to be employed after 2023. Otherwise, Saxony would have to reckon with significantly fewer young teachers, according to a report by the Berlin research and consulting company Interva commissioned by the Ministry of Education.
The possibility of becoming a civil servant for Saxon teachers since 2019 has led to significantly more recruitment. According to the ministry, around 10,000 teachers are currently civil servants in Saxony and almost 22,800 are employed. In addition, around 1,700 trainees are employed as civil servants who can be revoked, and 153 are employed.
Without the possibility of becoming a civil servant, the number of hires in the 2018/2019 school year would have been less than half or at most two-thirds of the teachers actually hired, it said. “Our expectations have been met. With the civil service, we are competitive in the hotly contested teacher job market in Germany,” said Minister of Education Christian Piwarz (CDU).
Since January 1st, teachers with basic training can be employed up to the age of 42. The regulation is initially valid until December 31, 2023. A decision on whether to continue will be made in the course of the ongoing budget negotiations. Piwarz called for a decision on whether to continue this year if possible. “Without the civil servants, there will be a teacher delta, which we cannot compensate for in any other way. That would have fatal consequences for the quality of education in Saxony,” Piwarz warned. Even with the possibility of becoming a civil servant, recruiting teachers is difficult and will remain one of the main tasks for the coming years.
