Kamenz (dpa/sn) – Consumers in Saxony continue to struggle with comparatively high inflation. According to the State Statistical Office, annual inflation was 9.2 percent in January, a record high. It results because the consumer price index nationwide was switched from the previous base year 2015 to the base year 2020. The previous record value of more than 10 percent in November 2022 therefore slipped to 8.9 percent.
The prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent) and for restaurants and accommodation (12.3 percent) rose particularly sharply within a year. “Compared to the previous month of December 2022, prices rose by a total of 1.2 percent. As expected, there were a large number of price increases at the beginning of the year,” it said.
The prices for electricity (14.1 percent), gas (31.5 percent) and district heating (37.6 percent) rose significantly compared to the previous month. On the other hand, the beginning of the sale resulted in price reductions for clothing (4.1 percent) and shoes and shoe accessories (2.4 percent). Annual inflation remains far from a stable price level. The European Central Bank defines this as two percent.
