Dresden/Torgau (dpa/sn) – The Torgau Documentation and Information Center (DIZ) is being renamed as part of its realignment after 30 years. The foundation of the Saxon Memorials Foundation is the “Torgau Place of Remembrance. Judicial Injustice – Dictatorship – Resistance” following a decision by the Board of Trustees. It is intended to document the judicial injustice that emanated from there in the past and to honor the resistance of courageous people who stood up against the unjust regimes of the 20th century, said Barbara Klepsch (CDU), Chair of the Foundation Council and Minister of Culture.
Deserters, opponents of the war and members of the resistance from all over Europe were imprisoned in the Torgau military prisons during the Second World War. With the Reich Court Martial, the place was the center of National Socialist military justice. After 1945, thousands were in two Soviet special camps, and during the GDR era, adults and young people were imprisoned there, also for political reasons. From the end of 2023, a new permanent exhibition is to trace the role of military justice as an instrument of rule by the National Socialists and, based on numerous biographies, the resistance against war and dictatorship at the time.
