Chemnitz (dpa / sn) – The migration researcher Birgit Glorius has described statements by CDU leader Friedrich Merz about “social tourism” by Ukraine refugees as “absurd”. Such rhetoric arouses resentment against people who have sought refuge from the war in this country and is not appropriate, the professor at Chemnitz University of Technology told the German Press Agency on Tuesday.

The research shows that refugee movements are never one-dimensional, emphasized the expert, who heads the scientific advisory board of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. Refugees still have many obligations in their country of origin, for example with regard to relatives. “Of course you drive back and forth if that’s possible.”

Merz has since apologized for his statements. He regrets using the word “social tourism,” he wrote on Twitter.
