Rötha (dpa / sn) – The last section of the Autobahn 72 between Chemnitz and Leipzig is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023 on a one-way lane. According to the current status, traffic can roll on one lane in both directions from mid-July, said Eric Winter, project manager of the new A 72 project, on Wednesday in Rötha. “You can then drive continuously on the autobahn, but the second lane is still missing, where you can then say: the autobahn is complete.”
According to Winter, some junctions on the approximately seven-kilometer stretch between Rötha and the A 38 south of Leipzig could initially only be used to a limited extent by motorists. The second lane in the direction of Leipzig should be completed by 2026.
In November of this year, work on a first section of the last section was also completed. From Rötha, traffic could then roll on a route of around two kilometers in the direction of Leipzig, said Winter. At the same time, the federal highway 95 near Espenhain (Leipzig district) will be reduced from originally four to two lanes and a cycle path will be added.
The 62-kilometer-long motorway link from the Bavarian Vogtland via Chemnitz to Leipzig has been built bit by bit since 2003.
