Radebeul (dpa/sn) – According to the environmental association BUND, a rare wild bee species has been discovered in the Radebeul vineyards. The organization announced on Wednesday. Two red bees (Dioxys cincta) were found below the Bismarck Tower and in the nearby vineyard. The name refers to the shape of the animal’s dorsal shield. The bee is extremely rare and its occurrence in Germany is only known in Brandenburg.
“A really great find. The red two-toothed bee is a cuckoo bee. This means that it does not build its own nests. Instead, it smuggles its eggs into the nests of other wild bee species,” explained Mandy Fritzsche, who monitors wild bees at BUND. The animals are originally native to the Czech Republic. It is assumed that the bee is spreading north along the Elbe and Oder-Neisse rivers, which could be related to climate change.
