Marienberg (dpa/sn) – The renovation of the mining monument “Grüner Graben” near Marienberg in the Erzgebirge district is entering the decisive phase. The approximately eight-kilometer-long “Green Graben” is one of the most important monuments in the mining history of the Saxon and Bohemian Ore Mountains and is protected as a mining historical monument, as the state-owned company Sachsenforst announced on Monday.
“The restoration and preservation of this unique monument of mining history and popular hiking destination in the former Marienberg mining area is a sign beyond Saxony,” said Forest Minister Wolfram Günther (Greens). Last but not least, regional companies and the skilled trades also benefited from the redevelopment.
During the work, the narrow hiking trail at the “Green Graben” will be temporarily closed for safety reasons. The project is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2023. According to the information, the Free State is investing a total of around 2.9 million euros in the region.
