Leipzig (dpa / sn) – The city of Leipzig warns of blue-green algae in the Auensee. Contact with the water of the lake in the district of Wahren should be avoided at all costs, the city administration announced on Wednesday in Leipzig. This also applies to dogs and other warm-blooded animals.
The algae formed toxins that could cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, skin irritation or hives on the skin. They formed because the water of the lake north-west of the city has a high nutrient content. In addition, high light intensity and high water temperature favored the growth of algae in stagnant water. The algae infestation can be recognized by an intense greenish to bluish pigmentation. According to the information, the algae sometimes swim as streaks or carpets on the water surface.
