Chemnitz (dpa/sn) – After the corona pandemic had shaken up the schedules, the curtain rises at the Chemnitz Theater for other previously planned productions. The operetta “The Merry Widow”, the opera “Carmen” and the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will premiere in the new season, the theater announced on Thursday when the 2022/2023 program was presented. The writer Stefan Heym (1913-2001), who was born in Chemnitz, is also represented in the new season.
The past two seasons have been characterized by many postponements, changes and cancellations, complained General Manager Christoph Dittrich with a view to the consequences of the corona pandemic. In addition, the drama and the puppet theater moved to an interim due to the renovation of the theater. Now his five-section house wants to start the new season with joy and vigour. He is confident of being able to win back the audience with the wide range of offers.
The orchestra, together with the MDR radio choir, wants to bring Robert Schumann’s oratorio “Paradise and the Peri” to life. The piece had never been performed in Chemnitz, it said. Meanwhile, the ballet offers both classical and contemporary dance with the three-part evening “Wellen.Flimmern” and the fairy tale classics “Elisa and the Wild Swans” and “Cinderella”. Meanwhile, opera lovers can look forward to Leoš Janá?ek’s “The Cunning Little Vixen” in Czech in addition to Weber’s “Der Freischütz”.
The drama alone wants to hold 14 premieres in the next season. One of them is “The Great Hanussen” by Stefan Heym. He wrote the piece in exile in 1941, and it was reportedly rediscovered in England in 2021. In Chemnitz it will now be seen on a stage for the second time, it was said.
