Dresden (dpa/sn) – The construction work on the Sachsen-Franconia-Magistrale around the Dresden-Plauen train station is taking longer and is becoming more expensive than originally planned. The reason for this is difficult building ground on one of the bridges, Deutsche Bahn announced on Tuesday during an on-site visit. As a result, the plans for the deep foundations of the Altplauen bridge and an adjacent new retaining wall would have had to be changed. The completion of the work, originally planned for the end of this year, will be postponed to June 2023, according to a spokeswoman. In addition, the costs rose from 32 million to 36 million euros, it said.

The project includes the renewal of three bridges and the modernization of tracks, overhead lines and control technology over a stretch of 1.5 kilometers. In addition, new noise barriers will be erected. Dresden-Plauen train station will have a new island platform and an elevator.

According to Deutsche Bahn, work is being carried out on the construction sites while train traffic is running. Nevertheless, there are restrictions for travelers. Several closures are planned at night in June. Then some S-Bahn trains on line 3 Dresden-Tharandt-Freiberg and trains on the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (RB 30) from Dresden to Zwickau would be replaced by buses on the section. This would also result in changes to the departure times, it said.
