For Ramón Tamames, the motion of no confidence in Pedro Sánchez will not end tomorrow, the day the vote will take place in Congress. When the Vox initiative declines with only 52 votes in favour, the lights go out and the interviews are over, the alternative candidate for the Presidency of the Government will return to his office to write down all that experience with the intention of publishing a new book.
It will be the first to address in a monothematic and exhaustive way the ins and outs of a motion of no confidence and to be written by its main protagonist. In addition, Tamames has the particularity in this case of having been the first candidate with an independent poster to lead such a situation in Spain. Well, the rest belonged to a political party.
In this new volume, he will collect not only his speech before Congress, which will be just one more part, but will also have the historical value of telling in first person what this whole process has been like, which has not been exempt from tensions with Vox due to the opinions oppositions that he has expressed on issues that are the party’s flagship. Thus, he is expected to narrate the moment in which Fernando Sánchez Dragó put his name on the table as a candidate until how the negotiations with Santiago Abascal’s party went later to find a fit despite their differences.
Sources close to him confirm Ramón Tamames’ will to write this book and point out that it is consistent with his career, because he has written a volume of everything he has done in his life. His prolific work testifies to this. He has published about twenty books of which the Economic Structure of Spain has been one of the most important, because it has been a reference manual in university studies for many generations.
The leak of his speech in the motion of censure, published by Eldiario.es, shows how the structuring of the text itself is already organized in book format. The document has an index, is divided into thematic chapters and even has bibliographical references at the bottom of the page. Logically, the speeches that are delivered in Congress lack any bibliographical note because in no case are they going to be read in public. It is an essential characteristic of academic publications.
The published draft has 31 chapters, one of which is called “conclusions”, but as he himself has revealed, it is an original version, which is not even one of the latest versions of the text. That is why it could be even longer than the 34 known pages, according to what he pointed out last Thursday.
The sources consulted affirm that Tamames wishes to record all this experience at 89 years of age. Not surprisingly, in his own speech he defines the experience like this: “Today’s act is for me like one of the last sequences of my own life script.”
To relate this episode in his life, Tamames keeps documents and e-mails with which he has been sharing opinions, ideas or draft speeches with his collaborators. It won’t be known until the book is finished, however, how far he’ll delve into the now-unknown details, such as where he thinks the leak came from, or if he’ll reveal any personal contacts he’s had during this time. They have mainly been with Vox, the party that has promoted him as a candidate, but also with other public figures, such as the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with whom he shared a meal when he already had Abascal’s offer to lead the motion of censorship.
