Terry McLaurin, Washington’s attorney, was able to sign a three-year extension on Tuesday that will reportedly pay him $71 million.
Ron Rivera, the Commanders’ head coach, expressed his confidence throughout the process that both the player and the team would be able agree to a new contract. This is in contrast to other teams that have traded wideouts this offseason. Rivera even said, “We are not trading Terry,” mid-June.
McLaurin believed that a deal would be reached.
McLaurin stated Wednesday that McLaurin felt “confident, honestly.” Talking to my agent and to the conversations that I’ve had coach Rivera. It was clear that they wanted me here, and I wanted it to be so.
“Clearly, this is a business. Since I arrived here, I have understood this. The hard part is when the business blocks certain things. We were able to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. And I’m proud of the guys in my peer group who are able get what they deserve. It was about reaching an agreement that would be best for me and the organization. It felt like we achieved that. “So I am just excited about the future.”
McLaurin was attracted to the fact that Rivera and the front offices are building the football side of McLaurin’s organization.
I feel Coach Rivera and his staff deserve credit for the unselfishness of that locker room. There are many guys here who are hungry and competitive. McLaurin stated that they want Washington to be back at the top. “We all know where our destination is. We all know where we want to go. I believe that’s the case. We also know that it will take effort and dedication on the part of everyone involved to get there.
“I would like to be part of that. It’s where I was drafted. It’s a place where fans show me love and appreciation. They are passionate about this fan base, this organization, and its history. This is something I wanted to be part of, especially considering where we are now and where we feel we are headed.
