The Foundation RedMadre, with a presence in Spain through the 40 Associations that form the network, assisted in 2018 to 25.698 women in a situation of vulnerability because of their pregnancy, some 7,000 more than in the previous year. The 92,71% of the mothers who faced abortion opted for the maternity to receive the specific help that he needed, that is to say, more than 9 out of every 10 women who receive support in the Foundation continue to move forward with your pregnancy.

The experience of this Foundation, as follows from his report of Activities, shows that there are many mothers who, facing a pregnancy in difficult circumstances, wish to continue with your pregnancy, but need support to remove the obstacles that they face. During 2018 the office of RedMadre received 4.485 phone calls, 3.290 WhatsApp messages and 1.690 e-mails from women seeking information and support about pregnancy, in addition to applications to the 40 Associations that make up the same.

The figures show the lack of supports for women in situation of vulnerability due to her pregnancy on the part of public Administrations. “The State has renounced to become involved in the protection and assistance of the pregnant woman in a vulnerable situation and has left them alone to NGOS support to motherhood. However, despite the efforts and willingness of all the volunteers and civil society committed, we do not reach all women who need it. It is essential to the real commitment of the State with these women that have been left abandoned, and which is sending the message that the solution to an unplanned pregnancy is abortion,” says Amaya Azcona, General Director of the Foundation.

The profile is what lead young women

In terms of the profile of women who requested support, the majority were between 18 and 29 years old (47,78%), followed by 30 to 39 (40,67%), and a 4,70% were minors. Of them, the 47,23% were Spanish and the 52,77% foreign. The 75% was in a situation of unemployment.

it Is significant increase of women that reported having suffered ill-treatment on the part of their partners due to pregnancy; the number rose to 2% in 2017 to a 6,68% in 2018. “Pregnancy is one of the causes of violence against women and it is doubly serious when you have two victims. Many women just suffer from abortions that pass for spontaneous not to be so,” says Azcona.

An encouraging fact, that reflects the greater engagement of the society with the pregnant woman in front of the disinterest of the State, is the increase in women supported by their partner (59,85%) and family (58,89%). The figures rise by around 19% compared to the previous year.

Law of Support to the Maternity

In terms of the assistance provided, Foundation RedMadre offered material help, emotional, economic, or legal to pregnant women who are criminalized because of their maternity in the field of labour, family and social.

In this sense, all of the mothers received orientation and information about pregnancy, 65% attended training courses, the 75% needed emotional ams and the half required legal and psychological counselling. 65% needed to receive diapers, the 20% baskets newborn, 10% other stuff such as strollers, cribs, etc, and a 5% formula.

Before the emotional needs, legal, medical, and economic needs of this risk group, Antonio Torres, President of Fundación RedMadre asks: “we urge the political representatives agree, and to pass a Law in Support of Motherhood , free of ideological prejudices and widely accepted, that consider pregnancy and birth as events that are strategic for our country, because they have a decisive influence on the evolution of Spanish society and must be protected with active policies and the impact real and immediate”.
