The Feria CES, one of the most important in the technology sector, returns this week to the convention center of the city of Las Vegas.
It does so after a couple of one year due to the pandemic (was held virtually in 2021) and under the shadow of the omicron variant, which has led to numerous cancellations of both assistants and exhibitors in recent days.
It is a cold water jug for the Association of Consumer Technology (CTA), organizer of the event, who trusted to make this citation a symbol of the recovery of the sector.
With many of the travel restrictions eliminated and high vaccination rates in many countries, everything seemed to point out that this ESC could return part of the atmosphere of previous editions.
The ESC was counted among the largest fairs in the technology sector, with more than 180,000 visitors and more than 4,500 companies in the exhibition for a typical year.
But in recent days, and before the increase in contagions by the omicron variant, more than 120 large companies have canceled their presence in the CES and several media have also decided to cover the ads remotely.
It is not just about taking precautions against possible contagions.
The organization has banned assistance to any non-vaccinated person this year and will provide two antigen tests to all attendees.
Part of the problem is that omicron has also complicated the logistics of the event, with thousands of flights canceled and lack of personnel.
Many international visitors have found difficulties also to get the PCR test or antigen test that the US requires to enter the country due to the increase in demand for this type of testing.
The result is that this CES will be in a certain way a hybrid fair, with some conferences and virtual press wheels, such as last year, and other face-to-face as in 2019 and previous years.
The number of exhibitors will be around 2,200 companies and the organization expects some 75,000 visitor.
It will also be a shorter ces.
The CTA has decided to eliminate the last day of the fair before the scarce public.
To try to encourage a little more corridors and conference halls, this year will allow free entry to the fairground.
Despite the problems, the ESC will have this year the same taste of past issues.
It is a fair in which the main manufacturers of consumer electronics show the products they prepare for the first half of the year and in which the sector of the image has always a protagonist role.
Samsung, LG and Sony, for example, will show your new generations of televisions and monitors during the next few days, with a bet on larger screens, greater resolutions and new advances in OLED panels, Microled and Miniled to show images with greater brightness and
contrast.
Although most mobile phone ads are reserved for Mobile World Congress in February, the CES also serves as stage to show some of the smartphones we see throughout the year.
Samsung and Oneplus, for example, will take advantage of these days to add new products to your catalog.
In recent years, CES has also become a major showcase for engine companies.
The irruption of electric vehicles and progress in automation have blurred borders with the technology sector.
This year, the companies General Motors and Mercedes-Benz will take advantage of the appointment of Las Vegas to present two new electric vehicles, the Silverado Chevrolet and the Vision EQXX conceptual vehicle.
Both, yes, have chosen to do so in virtual format.
