The University of the West Indies Appoints Six New Professors

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) recently appointed six new professors at its various campuses, showcasing the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and research. Dr. David Yawson, now a professor of Agri-Food Systems and Environmental Resilience at the Cave Hill Campus, brings a wealth of knowledge in agri-food systems science and environmental geography. His educational background includes a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Cape Coast, an MSc in Geo-Information Science from Wageningen University, and a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of Dundee.
Dr. Derek Mitchell, the new professor of General Surgery at the Mona Campus, is a consultant general surgeon at the University Hospital. His expertise lies in general breast, colorectal, endocrine, surgical nutrition, and biliary surgery. Professor Mitchell, a graduate of The UWI, has been actively involved in teaching and research, contributing significantly to the field of surgery.
Dr. Zoyah Kinkead-Clark, the newly appointed professor of Early Childhood Care and Education at the Mona Campus, specializes in early childhood education. With a diverse educational background, including a Doctor of Educational Studies (Early Childhood Education) from the University of Sheffield, Dr. Kinkead-Clark brings a wealth of experience to her role at The UWI.
Dr. Chris Maharaj, now a professor of Materials and Manufacturing at the St Augustine Campus, is the head of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. His research interests include the alternative use of waste materials, mechanical design optimization, failure analysis, and innovation management. With a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, London, Professor Maharaj has a strong foundation in engineering academia.
Dr. Venkatesan Sundaram, the new professor of Veterinary Anatomy at the St Augustine Campus, is the head of the Department of Basic Veterinary Sciences. His research spans diverse areas such as comparative vertebrate morphology, neuroscience, and reproductive biology. With over 25 years of experience in academia, Professor Sundaram has made significant contributions to the field of veterinary anatomy.
Dr. Brian Cockburn, the professor of Biochemistry and dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the St Augustine Campus, has a background in Chemistry/Biochemistry. His research focuses on prevalent conditions in the Caribbean, such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes, particularly in children. Professor Cockburn’s work in diabetes education and research has had a positive impact on the local community.
