Erfurt (dpa/th) – 30 Thuringian schools are taking part in this year’s Anne Frank Day with projects for diversity and democracy. “With ever-growing interest and commitment, Thuringian schools are taking a strong stand against anti-Semitism and racism with historical and political learning,” said Minister of Education Helmut Holter (left) on Thursday in Erfurt. There he welcomed pupils from an Erfurt school to the “Freundschaft” exhibition, which shows the life of the Jewish girl Anne Frank and their friendships during the National Socialist era.
Anne Frank Day has been celebrated every year since 2017 on June 12, the girl’s birthday. Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1929, she died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of only 15. She kept a diary from June 1942 until her arrest in August 1944, which was published after the war. Around 620 schools across Germany are taking part in Anne Frank Day 2022 with projects.
