Weimar (dpa/th) – The Thuringian choir scene has been performing in Weimar since Saturday with a repertoire ranging from oratorios to pop songs. 16 ensembles with a total of around 550 singers had registered for the eighth state choir meeting in the classic city at the weekend, as announced by the Thuringia State Music Council.

The president of this council, Christoph Meixner, drew attention to the difficult situation of the choirs in his greeting. The effects of the corona pandemic caused a lasting collapse of many school ensembles and numerous choirs that had aged together and could hardly find any new blood. In addition, there is hardly any nationwide musical education in schools. It threatens to be demoted to a leisure activity.

After two difficult Corona years, the meeting would therefore be the point of communication. With an audition in front of a jury, the choir singers could also qualify for the German Choir Competition next year in Hanover, it said.
