Erfurt (dpa/th) – The birth of Jesus was celebrated on Christmas Eve in Thuringia with church services, nativity plays and Christmas Eve. After two years of Corona-related regulations and bans, it is the first Christmas that could be celebrated again without restrictions in the parishes. The services on the Christmas holidays are usually celebrated in a particularly festive way with music, choir singing and communion.
In Schweina (Wartburg district), for example, tree-sized torches made of spruce brushwood were lit on Saturday. The Christmas torch fire is an old custom that has also been part of Thuringia’s “intangible cultural heritage” since this year.
