Hildburghausen (dpa/th) – The local authority has confirmed the deselection of the mayor of Hildburghausen, Tilo Kummer (left). The Hildburghausen district office announced that his term of office ended on Thursday. A new mayor for the city in southern Thuringia should be elected on June 4, 2023. Should a runoff election among two applicants become necessary, June 18 is scheduled for this.
The left-wing politician and former member of the state parliament Kummer did not survive a vote-out procedure supported by SPD and AfD city councilors last Sunday. According to the city administration, the first deputy Burkhard Knittel (non-party) will be in charge of official business until the new election.
The referendum on the deselection of Kummer was initiated by city councils from the SPD, AfD and a far-right voters’ association, among others. This had led to controversy, especially within the Thuringian SPD. According to the SPD, a party organization procedure was initiated against two SPD city councillors. An SPD city councilor resigned from the party after the incident.
