Erfurt (dpa/th) – Forest fires have covered such a large area in Thuringia this year as never before since records began. As Thuringia Forst announced on Monday in a preliminary forest fire balance sheet, more than 22 hectares had burned. In 2021, on the other hand, it was only 1.73 hectares. Similarly high values ??as this year were only registered in 2019 with 21 hectares and in 2004 with 18 hectares.

The number of forest fires was also comparatively high. Thuringia Forest counted 69 forest fires. Only in the dry year 2003 was the value higher with 90 forest fires. In 2021, on the other hand, only 10 forest fires were registered in the Thuringia Forest. Forest fire statistics have been kept since 1993.

The biggest forest fire there was at the beginning of August in the forestry office in Saalfeld-Rudolstadt. There, a fire had spread to 7 hectares. Most of the forest fires (93 percent) occurred between June and August.
