Erfurt (dpa/th) – Thuringia supports farmers who want to improve animal husbandry on their farms. Around 30 million euros in subsidies from the state treasury are available for animal welfare-friendly husbandry of cattle and pigs in the period up to 2027, as the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday in Erfurt.

Around 20 million euros have already been approved by the end of 2022 via the new animal welfare guidelines, said Minister of Agriculture Susanna Karawanskij (left). “We don’t want to wait for the federal government any longer.” Businesses need planning security. The aim is to prevent operational closures and the relocation of animal husbandry abroad.

The minister pointed out that many farms with animal husbandry had economic difficulties. Pig farming, in particular, is threatened with relocation abroad. Reasons are increased costs at a persistently low price level. Another reason is growing social expectations of more animal welfare in agriculture.
