Millions of people in Thuringia got the little spades from vaccination centers for immunization against the corona virus. Now the last of these facilities are closing, and in future you will have to go to the doctor for an injection.

Erfurt (dpa/th) – On Friday, people in Thuringia have the last chance to be vaccinated against the corona virus in one of the remaining vaccination centers in the state. The last six vaccination centers close one day before Christmas Eve, as announced by the Thuringia Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVT). Within about two years, around 2.2 million appointments for immunization in the vaccination centers were booked in Thuringia as of Wednesday – of which 20120 vaccinations were for children.

According to KVT, the corona vaccinations in the Free State started on December 27, 2020 – in the nursing home for the elderly “Am Birkenwäldchen” in Zeulenroda-Triebes (Greiz district). A resident of the home had received the first corona vaccination in Thuringia, which was long awaited by many people at the time. Vaccination has been an integral part of life for her since her earliest childhood, she said at the time. She got the spade from a mobile vaccination team. The big vaccination against the corona virus in the Free State began with 15 such teams. Later, when there was more vaccine, up to 29 vaccination centers operated. At peak times, more than 150,000 vaccinations were administered per week

According to the KVT, most vaccinations were given in the Erfurt Helios Hospital – 79,046 doses of vaccine landed in the upper arms of the people. 73,171 vaccination appointments were made in Weimar and 72,584 in the Erfurt Catholic Hospital.

People were not only immunized in vaccination centers, but also in medical practices or in institutions by mobile vaccination teams. According to data from the Robert Koch Institute, a total of around 4.3 million corona vaccine doses have been administered in Thuringia to date.

After the end of the vaccination centers, corona vaccinations will only be possible in medical practices or in certain facilities such as retirement homes by mobile vaccination teams.
