Erfurt (dpa/th) – Young people with their own income who are cared for in youth welfare facilities will no longer have to contribute to the costs in the future. According to a decision by the Federal Council, young people who receive an apprenticeship wage, for example, can now dispose of their money themselves, explained Education Minister Helmut Holter (left) on Friday in Erfurt. This would make it easier for them to grow up and start a self-determined life, for example to finance their driver’s license training or their first apartment.
The previous practice had led to a restriction in the transition to an independent life, the minister explained. After a long struggle, the federal government has created the possibility that young people in child and youth welfare are no longer required to pay the costs of youth welfare services. With the decision of the Federal Council, the way is clear for the abolition of the collection of costs for those cared for in youth welfare from January 2023.
