Gotha (dpa/th) – The Friedenstein Castle Foundation has purchased a portrait of Princess Marie Charlotte Amalie of Saxe-Meiningen. The painting came from the possession of the descendants of Bernhard von Lindenau, who played an important role at the Gotha court, the foundation announced on Thursday. The portrait, made by the portrait painter Johann Georg Ziesenis, was purchased for almost 20,000 euros. The acquisition of the portrait is an important addition to the collections. The painting can now be seen by visitors on a tour of the historic rooms at Friedenstein Palace.
Marie Charlotte Amalie was the wife of Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and lived at Friedenstein Castle until his death in 1804. She was considered an educated princess of the Enlightenment who supported her husband’s scientific interests and corresponded with leading scientists of her time.
