Erfurt (dpa/th) – Only 16 habilitations were completed at Thuringian universities last year. Nine men and seven women acquired the qualification to teach at universities, as the State Office for Statistics announced on Monday in Erfurt. That was exactly 16 less than the year before. This means that the number of habilitations has fallen for the second time in a row. According to the information, there were an average of 36.3 habilitations per year over the past ten years (2012 to 2021).
The largest proportion of habilitations was completed at 81.3 percent at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. A total of 13 scientists passed the highest-ranking university examination here. At the time the teaching qualification was obtained, seven habilitated (43.8 percent) were employed at a Thuringian university.
The average age of all habilitands with a teaching qualification was 44.1 years. The age range was between 40 and 47 years. As a spokesman for the state office said, the decline is probably due to the fact that it has become easier to teach at a university without a habilitation.
