Gera (dpa/th) – The city of Gera will receive six million euros from the federal government for the construction of a new sports hall. The new two-sided sports hall in the Lusan district is to be multifunctional and barrier-free, as the city administration announced on Friday. In addition, it is to be used for regional and national competitions. A grandstand with 200 seats is also planned. The budget committee of the Bundestag approved the subsidy on Wednesday in Berlin.
The new sports hall is part of the concept for the “Lusan Education Campus”: Two schools, the associated sports halls, the large outdoor facilities and the previously empty building on Elsterberger Strasse are to be merged into one large overall area. According to the social affairs department, this is intended to create a campus for modern learning with the aim of combining school and extracurricular activities. Construction of the new sports hall is scheduled to start in 2024. The entire construction project in Lusan is expected to cost around 35 million euros.
