Erfurt (dpa/th) – 250 police trainees for the middle service and 50 for the higher service are currently completing their first year of training in Thuringia. Unlike in the past, none of the police students have broken off their training for personal reasons, said the head of the Thuringian police training center, Günther Lierhammer, on Thursday in Erfurt. “I also attribute this to our advertising campaign, with which we were able to address the target group better and more precisely.”
In recent years, police trainees had repeatedly completed their training of their own accord – some because the training was too strenuous for them, others because they had found jobs that they liked better.
However, the police separated from some of the junior police officers who were hired on October 1, 2022 – for example because they drove drunk, said Lierhammer.
With a new advertising campaign, the police want to inspire young people. According to Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD), this campaign also includes an image film for the first time. He is confident that it will not least be possible to fill all 300 available training positions for junior police officers this year.
Lierhammer said that there have been around 1,300 applications so far for the start of training on October 1, 2023. Last year, a total of around 1700 applications had been submitted by the application deadline for the vacancies.
According to the Interior Ministry, the new campaign will run for four years. By the end of 2025, around 1.5 million euros have been earmarked for recruiting young talent.
