Erfurt (dpa/th) – The life expectancy of Thuringians has recently decreased due to the corona pandemic. According to data published on Tuesday by the State Statistical Office for the period 2019/2021, a newborn girl in Thuringia is calculated to be 82.99 years old on average. This is a minus of 0.28 years compared to the 2018/2020 mortality table. A newborn boy can therefore expect to be 77.21 years old (minus 0.45 years).

The main reason for this is that due to Corona there were significantly more deaths in younger age groups last year, it said. This means that the sometimes timid but steady increases in life expectancy in Thuringia over the past five to seven years are no longer valid for the time being.

According to the State Office, the decline in life expectancy in the period 2019/2021 can be observed in both men and women in all age groups. Viewed over a longer period of time, the average life expectancy of newborns is still significantly higher than in previous years.
