Erfurt (dpa/th) – Tourism in Thuringia recovered last year, but has not yet reached the level before the corona pandemic. This emerges from figures presented by the State Statistical Office in Erfurt on Thursday. The number of overnight stays then rose by 37.3 percent to more than 9 million – an increase of 2.5 million overnight stays compared to 2021, which was more strongly influenced by the corona pandemic.
However, the increase in the number of overnight stays was below the national trend at plus 45.3 percent. Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, 1.3 million fewer overnight stays were booked in Bavaria. This trend affected all tourism regions from the southern Harz to the Rhön.
In 2022, Thuringia was also a destination, especially for short vacationers – on average, guests only stayed 2.7 days and thus even shorter than 2021 with a stay of 2.9 days. The growth in foreign tourists last year was above average at 87.7 percent. A total of 192,000 guests came from abroad, who booked 468,000 overnight stays (plus 58.3 percent).
Hotels and guesthouses with at least ten beds and campsites in the Free State reported 3.4 million guests – 1.2 million more than in 2021, but 600,000 fewer than in 2019.
