Erfurt/Oberhof (dpa/th) – Winter showed what it can do in Thuringia over the weekend: local temperatures fell below minus ten degrees Celsius on Sunday night and were thus in the range of severe frost, according to a German meteorologist weather service announced on Sunday on request. The south of the Free State in particular was covered with a thin layer of snow, which, however, did not yet allow tobogganing and skiing. In difficult road conditions, there were some slippery accidents, the police reported.
The lowest temperatures were recorded on Sunday night at the measuring stations at the Bad Berka landing site (Weimarer Land) with minus 11.1 degrees Celsius and minus 10.6 degrees at Erfurt Airport. Severe frost also prevailed locally in the Saale-Orla district. Temperatures rose slightly during the day, but generally remained in the freezing range.
The sun shone at times on Sunday, especially in the northern parts of the Free State between Eichsfeld and Altenburger Land, while it was often cloudy and foggy in the Thuringian Forest. Walkers in Thuringia’s low mountain range could look forward to snow-covered spruce trees – however, only between one and six centimeters of snow were measured at the measuring stations. In Dermbach in the Wartburg district, the maximum was ten centimeters.
The police were called to several slippery accidents, including in Körner in the Unstrut-Hainich district or in Tautendorf in the Saale-Holzland district. Two cars collided there on Saturday on the village street after a slide, three people were slightly injured.
According to the forecasts of the German Weather Service, the roads in Thuringia can be slippery again on Monday night. A low spur brings snow, sometimes sleet. Black ice is possible, said the meteorologist. Temperatures could rise to four degrees during the day on Monday. “Permanent frost then only exists at the highest altitudes.”
