Erfurt (dpa/th) – Despite the mild temperatures, the motorway maintenance departments in Thuringia traditionally started winter service on Tuesday. As every year, the colleagues went into shift work on November 1st, said a spokesman for Autobahn GmbH on Tuesday. The almost 200 employees of the four motorway maintenance depots are currently primarily concerned with caring for trees, “but if it snows, then winter service is priority 1,” said Möhring. If necessary, it is now possible to react to ice and snowfall around the clock and seven days a week.

Almost 1,000 kilometers of motorway service as well as junctions and rest areas in Bavaria are looked after. According to Möhring, a total of 55 vehicles, some of which are up to seven meters wide, keep the motorways in a passable condition even in snow and frost. According to Autobahn GmbH, around 13,000 tons of road salt are stored in the warehouses and silos. This means that the warehouses are full – due to a two-year contract, the conditions from the previous year are still valid.
