A shocking moment at a chess event in Moscow: a chess robot played three games at the same time against children. According to reports from the Russian state news agency Tass and the portal “Baza”, a seven-year-old boy was injured. The robot broke a finger with its mechanical arm.

The chess computer was equipped with a robotic arm, with which it moved the pieces across the board. A video shows this arm grabbing the boy’s finger. Adults rush to help and free the child. Sergei Lazarev, President of the Moscow Chess Federation (FSM), told the TASS news agency that the boy’s finger was broken and had to be put in a cast: “Of course that’s bad.” However, the seven-year-old was able to continue playing the next day with a cast.

Moscow Chess Federation vice-president Sergei Smagin gave the Ria Novosti news agency more details on the course of the painful clash. According to this, the chess robot had captured one of the boy’s pieces and wanted to take it off the chessboard with his arm. However, the seven-year-old didn’t wait for the artificial intelligence to finish its movement, but stretched out his hand too quickly to make his own move. This is how man and machine got in each other’s way.

“There are certain safety rules and the kid violated them,” Smagin said. “When he made his move, he didn’t realize he had to wait.” To his knowledge, the incident is the first of its kind, the chess robot has been in use for 15 years and has already played many games of this type – without incident. Even though the injured boy was later able to finish the tournament, according to media reports, his family has filed a complaint.
