A most unexpected revelation. An undercover cop used his fake identity when he became involved in a 19-year relationship. He married and even had a child with his wife without ever revealing who he really was. Our Guardian colleagues reveal that in 2020, while they were engaged, the woman discovered that her fiancé, whom she believed to be a businessman, was in fact a police officer who had subjected her to sophisticated deception for almost two decades.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) waited at least seven years before informing the woman that the person she knew as her fiancé was using a false identity given to her for undercover police operations, specifies the British newspaper. “This whole thing has broken her,” the woman’s sister said. “She expressed suicidal thoughts. She cries every day. She does not sleep. She’s really scared.”

“While working undercover, a former officer had an inappropriate relationship with a member of the public using his alias,” a police spokesperson said. “The member of the public has no links to the police and until recently was completely unaware of his links to an undercover police officer. He played no role in the operational deployment of the agent and was not linked to it. […] We fully recognize that those involved were deeply distressed for several years, and continue to be so today. We are sorry. »

The reasons behind this relationship are unknown at this point. The woman was not the subject of any surveillance operation nor her family. The undercover agent could be “manipulative,” describes the woman’s brother, who says that when the couple had relationship problems, he “always went to my mother and talked to her to try to convince her.”
