Jack Teixeira, the young man accused of being behind one of the biggest leaks of Pentagon documents in the last decade, was charged this Friday with crimes of transmission of national defense information and extraction of classified information.
The 21-year-old appeared this morning before the magistrate judge of the District Court of Massachusetts, David Hennessy, who read the charges against him, according to national media.
If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Jack Douglas Teixeira, of North Dighton, Massachusetts, who was arrested by the FBI at his home Thursday, appeared in federal court wearing a khaki brown jumpsuit. According to US Attorney General Merrick Garland, Teixeira was arrested “without incident.”
His arrest was broadcast live on US television networks, after a week of investigation into one of the most serious classified document leaks in the United States since 2013, when Edward Snowden released thousands of National Security Agency documents.
