A gunman shot dead ten people in the small Montenegrin town of Cetinje on Friday and was then killed by a passer-by. According to the prosecutor on duty Andrijana Nastic, according to the portal “vijesti.me”, two children were among the fatalities. The motives of the 34-year-old attacker are unclear.
Six other injured were taken to hospitals. Three of them were in mortal danger, said the director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG), Ljiljana Radulovic. One of the injured was released home shortly afterwards.
The perpetrator first shot two children aged eight and ten with a hunting rifle, said local police chief Zoran Brdjanin. He then shot the children’s mother, who later died in hospital. The family lived as tenants in an apartment owned by the perpetrator.
The perpetrator then apparently shot indiscriminately at passers-by on the street with the same weapon, killing seven. A police officer was also injured in the shooting.
“We are all shocked,” said Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic, according to Montenegrin state television. The killing spree was an “unprecedented tragedy”.
The medieval town of Cetinje, located 27 kilometers west of the capital Podgorica, is considered the cultural and historical center of Montenegro and was the country’s capital from the late 15th century until 1918.
