On July 11, 2015, Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped from Altiplano high-security prison, 90 kilometers west of Mexico City. This is the second time in 14 years that this has happened. The fugitive is last seen near the shower room before disappearing.
In the shower, the guards discover a hole and a ladder leading to a tunnel over 1500 meters long, which leads to a house under construction in the middle of a field. This escape has been meticulously prepared, since this famous tunnel is equipped with a ventilation system and a motorcycle, installed on rails, which is used to extract the earth and transport equipment. “After noting that he was not reappearing”, an alarm was raised and “his escape was confirmed”. “Research has been launched in the area to find him as well as on the roads of neighboring states”.
“El Chapo”, diminutive of “chaparro” (“short”), referring to his height, 1.64 meters, had already escaped from a high security prison in 2001, hidden in a dirty laundry basket. After 13 years of tracking, soldiers managed to capture him in February 2014 during a night raid in a seaside resort.
His hiding had given rise to many rumours, from a facial cosmetic surgery operation to incognito walks in the cattle fairs of Sinaloa. It is also said that he sometimes went to trendy restaurants, confiscated the cell phones of customers before dining, then took his leave by paying all the bills.
Joaquin Guzman would have had three or four wives. The last of them is a young beauty queen who married on his 18th birthday in 2007 and who was with him when he was arrested. We lend him 10 children. One of them, Ivan Guzman, had cracked an enigmatic tweet a week before the escape: “Everything comes at the right time to who knows how to wait”. This had obviously not put a flea in the ear of the penitentiary administration. His head had been put at a price of 5 million dollars by the United States and more than 2.2 million by Mexico. El Chapo was captured in January 2016. The authorities exhibited in front of the cameras this little mustachioed man, in a white shirt, surrounded by two soldiers of the Mexican Navy.
