Four people have died and eight others have been injured, including two police officers, in a shooting that occurred this Monday morning at a bank in the US city of Louisville (Kentucky, USA), the local Police reported.
At first, the Police reported five deaths, but later corrected that figure and explained that four people have died as victims of the attack.
In addition, the death of the author of the shooting, who apparently had a “connection” with the bank and was an employee or former employee of the financial institution, explained in a press conference the lieutenant colonel of the Louisville Police, Paul L. Humphrey.
The shooter died inside the bank and police are trying to determine whether he was shot dead by responding officers or killed himself when he was cornered, Humphrey said.
The shooting occurred this morning around 08:30 local time (12:30 GMT) in a building in downtown Louisville where one of the headquarters of the Old National Bank is located, a regional bank with branches in the southeast and midwest of the United States.
According to Humphrey, the police were able to respond to the incident in just three minutes and, upon entering the bank, the attacker was still firing.
During that exchange of fire, two police officers were injured and are in serious condition. One of them had to be operated on at the university hospital in Louisville, Humphrey explained.
The rest of the wounded, who are not serious, are receiving treatment at that hospital.
The four fatalities lost their lives at the time of the shooting, inside the bank, Humphrey detailed.
For his part, the governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, appeared before the press visibly moved and said that two of the deceased were his “friends.” He also explained that another of his friends is in the hospital and hopes that he can get ahead.
In the same press conference, the mayor of the city, Craig Greenberg, praised that the rapid response of the police prevented more victims and went so far as to describe them as “heroes”.
He added that what happened is a “tragedy” and expressed his hope that the neighbors find comfort within their community to prevent these “horrible” acts of armed violence from continuing.
A senior White House official explained to the press that US President Joe Biden has been informed of what happened. In addition, the White House has said that it will offer more information throughout the day.
