Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said today that the European Union (EU) must give the green light to Ukraine’s accession negotiations before the end of the year, without there being an “alternative”, according to what he said at a meeting in Kiev with representatives diplomats.
“By the end of the year, the decision to start negotiations for the accession of our state must be approved by the European Council. There is no alternative to this,” he said, according to the “Ukrinform” news agency.
Zelensky stressed that the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, must approve all draft laws related to the package necessary for the start of negotiations and that their elaboration constitutes a matter of “national security.”
Also for the EU, the accession of Ukraine is a matter of security, he said, since any uncertainty in this regard constitutes a weakness that “tempts” Russia to act aggressively and to take advantage of the vacuum where there is a lack of cooperation between the European institutions.
Ukraine received accession candidate country status in June 2022 and the European Commission (EC) is scheduled to publish a report on Kiev’s progress in implementing the requirements for the opening of negotiations next autumn.
On the other hand, Zelensky conveyed to the Ukrainian ambassadors that the Government is “making an effort” so that the global summit that Kiev is scheduled to host to promote the “Peace Formula” can be held in autumn.
It is necessary that “representatives of the north and south, east and west” come to it, as he remarked. “Autumn is very, very close, but there is still time to prepare for the summit and involve most countries in the world,” she said.
