BAE Systems has recently announced the start of the integration of the Mk 45 naval gun system onto HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates being built for the UK Royal Navy. This marks a significant milestone for the program, as all ships in the class are set to receive the Mk 45 and its Ammunition Handling System (AHS) installations.

The Mk 45 gun system, which includes the 5-inch, 62-calibre Mk 45 Mod 4A naval gun along with a fully automated AHS, is designed to enhance firepower and ammunition readiness for the Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates. This advanced system not only ensures sailor safety but also reduces crewing requirements and delivers reliable reloading performance in all sea states. Additionally, the Mk 45 AHS is capable of managing all 5-inch munitions currently in service.

With a $219 million contract awarded in February 2023, BAE Systems is on track to equip the next batch of Type 26 frigates with the Mk 45 and AHS systems. The success of this integration has also led to the selection of the Mk 45 system by the Australian Navy for its Hunter Class frigates, which share the same Type 26 design. Engineering and program support for this initiative are being carried out at BAE Systems’ facilities in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with production taking place in Louisville, Kentucky.

The installation of the Mk 45 AHS onto HMS Glasgow is a crucial step forward in enhancing the capabilities of the Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates. The automated reloading system not only boosts operational efficiency but also ensures that these advanced warships are equipped with cutting-edge technology to meet the demands of modern naval warfare. As BAE Systems continues to make progress on integrating the Mk 45 system onto the remaining Type 26 frigates, the Royal Navy can look forward to a fleet that is well-equipped and ready to face any challenges that come its way.
