Imports from Russia have decreased in volume since the beginning of the year. However, the significant rise in prices has kept the value of revenue for Moscow fairly constant. More than a fifth of the products purchased went to Bavaria, followed by Brandenburg.

In the first nine months, Germany imported goods worth more than 30 billion euros from Russia. In addition to oil and natural gas, important import goods from Russia in the nine months were coal and metals. Nationally, natural gas and oil accounted for 55 percent of imports. The majority of imports went to Bavaria, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. The volume for the Free State shrank by more than a third compared to the previous year. Due to the high price increases for energy and raw materials, however, this was not noticeable in the value: it amounted to 6.6 billion euros and rose by almost 55 percent in the nine months.

Brandenburg follows in second place in the federal state ranking. 14.2 percent of Russian imports worth 4.2 billion euros went there. The quantity fell here in the nine-month period by only 1.8 percent – the value increased by almost 46 percent due to the high prices. The refinery in Schwedt, which processes Russian oil and thus supplies a large part of the north-east and the capital region, may have played a major role in this.

The number three North Rhine-Westphalia imported goods worth 3.5 billion euros from Russia from January to September, the share of total imports was 11.7 percent, as the statisticians further reported. Here the amount even went down by 40 percent – the value only rose by five percent.

According to statistics, medicines and machines in particular were exported to Russia. From January to the end of September, the quantities also fell sharply here, as did the value. In the nine months, it totaled 11.6 billion euros. In terms of exports, North Rhine-Westphalia had the highest share at 15.0 percent, followed by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Almost a third of the goods sold to Russia were not produced in Germany, but only traded in between. Therefore, these exports cannot be assigned to any federal state.
