Since being taken over by Elon Musk, Twitter has polarized people like no other social media company. Donald Trump? Allowed to come back, as well as many other banned users. Musk argues with freedom of expression – but this is less popular in Europe than in the USA.
According to the EU, Twitter still has to make great efforts to comply with the regulations in Europe. “There is still a huge amount of work to be done,” said EU Commissioner Thierry Breton to the new boss of the US company, Elon Musk.
Breton therefore listed transparent user guidelines, a significant increase in content monitoring, the protection of freedom of expression, a decisive action against disinformation and a limitation of targeted advertising as points. It was agreed that the EU would carry out a stress test at Twitter headquarters in early 2023 to ensure that the short message service complies with EU regulations, it said.
Musk has declared himself a champion of freedom of speech on the occasion of his multi-billion dollar Twitter acquisition. However, there are major legal, political and philosophical differences between the corresponding ideas in the USA and Europe.
Musk’s supporters have accused Twitter’s leadership of censorship. Critics, on the other hand, fear that the short message service under the Tesla boss will not take decisive action against disinformation, hate postings and fake news.
