The shortage of skilled workers in Germany also affects the startup scene. Nine out of ten young companies in the country currently have vacancies, said the chairman of the Federal Association of German Start-ups, Christian Miele, the news magazine “Focus”. “The biggest difficulties” are in the areas of IT, sales and marketing.
Against this background, Miele pleaded for “quicker and simplified immigration”. Not only would the official procedures have to be improved for this, it is a “huge challenge” in “all areas: We are only attractive as an immigration country if craftsmen can build apartments and educators can take care of the offspring,” he told the magazine.
Overall, the situation for young companies is currently good. “After cooling off sharply in the past few months, the business climate is back to the pre-crisis level, and looking to the future in particular is becoming more optimistic,” said Miele. Investments in startups “didn’t collapse,” investors “just became a little more cautious.”
The business climate index for the startup industry rose by 8.2 points to 50.4 points compared to the summer of 2022, according to a survey published by the startup association and the consulting firm Accenture. 67 percent of those surveyed were optimistic about their business prospects. In the previous survey, the rate was 54.2 percent.
Almost half of the participants gave a positive assessment of the current situation. “Startups and the entire tech industry are suffering from the tense situation,” said Accenture manager Sebastian Günther. “But founders don’t give up, see light at the end of the tunnel and are now looking to the future with more optimism.”
