A recent analysis by seattlepi.com staff showed that just eight of 40 Seattle neighborhoods were “affordable” for those earning the median household income in the city. 

If those earning $80,000 are struggling to buy in the city, what is everyone else supposed to do? While it’s not always ideal — or possible — areas just north of the city can provide quality homes with plenty of amenities at hundreds of thousands less than those with a Seattle address.

These homes in Brier, Bothell and Mountlake Terrace range in price from $350,000 to $439,950. Of the three areas, Mountlake Terrace tends to be the most affordable, with homes going for a median of $390,000, according to the past 30 days of Redfin data. In Brier, that number is $498,000, while in Bothell it’s $530,000.

While Snohomish County does offer cheaper real estate than King County, it’s worth noting that prices in Snohomish County also are rising. The median sale price for single-family homes and condos jumped 10.4 percent from 2015 to 2016 to $370,000, according to a year-end report by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. King County took the highest median home and condo price of properties sold last year in 23 counties, at $489,000.
