It is said to be largest biosupermarket of company in Berlin. And for 26-year-old this could be a real problem – because Franziska works in Bioase44, an owner-managed Biofachhandel, as it is called in technical language. 120 square meters of shop space, seven employees; Fair, biological and regional products are sold. The shop is surrounded by Turkish supermarkets, casinos and a Woolworth.

The new Biosupermarket, which is going to be out, will be disputing to store some customers. “When we heard that bio company RANKOMMT to us up to 300 meters, we have become narrow,” says Franziska.

The branch, which is to open in autumn according to bio company, is not first biosupermarket in immediate vicinity. From Franziska’s place of work you can reach three branches of Biomarket and two bio companys on foot in under 20 minutes. Four of se businesses have opened in past three years.

“It was primarily about earning money”

The number of Biosupermärkte has risen by 130 per cent in past seven years, according to a study commissioned by Federal Association of Natural Foods, in Germany. Franziska knows both sides of biotrade. She began her training as a retail clerk at Viv’s Biofresher market until Dennree group took over. The Biowholesaler is market leader in Germany, it operates chain for it’s biomarket. “I actually liked working re, but with takeover mood changed. It was no longer a matter of solidarity and sustainability – n it was first and foremost about earning money, “says Franziska. She can understand that, “but that’s not what you write on door.”

Because idea of sustainability is important to her, she did not stay with it after training. She chose Bioase44, where she has been working for three years. “Here I am freer in my actions and can contribute. I’m not just a cog in system here, “she says.

The market for Biofood has changed dramatically in recent years. In past, customers received biologically produced food only in small alternative farm shops and in Reform House – today re is this product at almost every disco. In 2017, organic products generated more than ten billion euros. And Biosupermärkte also spread more and more. This was at expense of small organic shops: ir number decreased by 14 percent since 2010.
