The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and his predecessor in office, Pablo Casado, held a private lunch this Wednesday to coincide with the first anniversary of the fall of the second as party leader.
Party sources have confirmed the meeting that they frame in a context of “normalcy and respect” typical of “two people who have had the honor of presiding over the Popular Party.” They also point out from Genoa that the meal between the two was scheduled for the end of last year and could not finally be held “for scheduling reasons.”
Feijóo and Casado, they point out, maintain a “fluid relationship” that has not been short-circuited to the point that, over the last year, “they have shared reflections on various occasions.” Lunch took place in a restaurant -La Taberna del Alabardero- very close to the Senate headquarters.
This same week, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the political ouster of Pablo Casado, the campaign spokesman, Borja Sémper, assured that the former party leader has “the doors open” like any militant and added, “even more so for to have been president” of the formation.
Despite this, Casado was not invited to the recent PP convention held in Valencia, which, however, former presidents José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy did attend. PP sources indicate that both attended in their double capacity as former leaders of the PP and former presidents of the Government.
The meal between Feijóo and Casado takes place days after the first anniversary of the fall of the former president of the PP. Last Thursday EL MUNDO revealed the details of how that historic crisis was experienced at the party headquarters. Also these days some media have published some of the personal messages that PP leaders exchanged, such as Cuca Gamarra or Javier Maroto, in that tense situation.
Pablo Casado opened a definitive crisis in the PP by confronting the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for control of the formation in Madrid. A clash that led the first to accuse Ayuso of having allowed her brother to benefit from succulent opaque contracts during the pandemic. However, the accusation was not supported by evidence.
That war provoked an uprising of the barons and main popular leaders who in the course of barely a week abandoned Casado and promoted the rise of Feijóo.
Pablo Casado had his last intervention as leader of the opposition in Congress in the control session of the Government on February 23, 2022. He then handed over his act of deputy and completely withdrew from the political scene.
