Porsche has issued a recall for thousands of cars due to safety concerns regarding the wheels. The luxury car manufacturer has informed around 1,000 drivers in the UK not to drive their vehicles until further notice. The issue specifically affects models with centre-lock wheels that are attached to the axle with one bolt, unlike most cars that have five-bolt wheels. This design flaw can lead to damage or breakage of the central locking nut, potentially causing the wheel to become loose and resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle.
The affected models include the Porsche 718 (982), 911 (992), and Panamera (G3). Porsche has stated that the only solution to the problem is a replacement part, which is expected to be available for the majority of affected vehicles in the UK by February. This is not the first time Porsche has had to issue recalls, as earlier this year, they recalled 27,000 Taycans due to a battery fire risk and also issued a global recall for the Taycan due to a brake system issue.
In addition to Porsche’s recalls, there are reports of a potential new emissions scandal similar to the ‘dieselgate’ scandal that hit Volkswagen in 2015. The Department for Transport (DfT) is investigating 47 different models from 11 manufacturers suspected of emitting more pollutants than allowed. This could lead to thousands of cars being recalled, impacting consumers nationwide.
