A new peak for Real Madrid. The Spanish football club, the most successful in the history of the Champions League (14 trophies) and La Liga (35), now sits at the top of the economic rankings. The Madrid club is the one which generated the highest turnover in world football last season, while Paris SG places third in a ranking where ticketing and commercial revenue have become preponderant.
With 831 million euros in turnover for the 2022-2023 financial year, it is for the Spanish club a return to the top of this ranking established by the Deloitte firm. He had not occupied it since the 2017-2018 season. As for PSG, it climbed onto the podium for the first time with nearly 802 million euros, behind Manchester City (826 million). Olympique de Marseille ranks twentieth (258 million).
The twenty best performing clubs financially recorded a record cumulative turnover of €10.5 billion, up 14% on the previous season. This growth was fueled by records in ticketing (1.9 billion euros) and merchandising (4.4 billion). According to Deloitte, football fans flocked to stadiums after the end of health restrictions during the pandemic period. On the other hand, revenues collected from television broadcasting rights have stalled.
Boom in women’s football
More broadly, the study notes a link between the sporting performances of clubs and their financial results, as illustrated by the case of Liverpool, which rose from third to seventh place in this ranking, and fifth in the Premier League last season. Even if Real Madrid and PSG relied more on their commercial performances.
For its part, women’s football has experienced a boom. The average turnover of its fifteen richest clubs increased by 61% in one year, to €4.3 million. Women’s FC Barcelona dominates the ranking with 13.4 million euros.
